Arlesey Town 5, Falmouth Town 3

TWO goals in the final ten minutes clinched an unexpected place in the last 16 of the FA Vase for unfashionable Arlesey Town.

On a pitch which 24 hours earlier was still under water, Falmouth Town failed to make the most of their chances in an end-to-end tie.

Having snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against highly fancied Eastwood Handley in the previous round, Arlesey repeated their never-say-die performance to leave Town reflecting on what might have been had they taken just one of three very good second-half chances.

Town took the lead with Jeff Babb heading home Mark Rowe's cross, before Danny Howells hit back for Arlesey.

Town regained the lead with a brilliant Tommy Matthews header into the top corner but disaster struck just before half-time when Howells squeezed a shot inside the near post to level the scores.

The home side edged ahead after the break thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Matthews, but Ian Gosling levelled from the spot after Glyn Hooper was upended in the box.

Arlesey move back in front with 15 minutes to play when Mark Cochrane sprinted past the Town defence and slotted past Dave Philp, before Ian Donnelly put the game out of Town's reach with five minutes left.

Town: D Philp, C Long, S Jewell, D Northcott, D Babb, T Matthews, G Hooper, N Thwaites, J Babb, M Rowe, I Gosling. Subs: P Scrace, D Powell.

Camborne go to town in Junior Cup upset

CAMBORNE Town pulled off the shock result of the round in the Cornwall Junior Cup when they dumped holders Falmouth Athletic out of the competition after a 3-2 extra-time win.

Town, a mid-table side in the Mining League, gave their best team performance of the season, but that will be no consolation to an Athletic side who had their sights set on retaining the trophy.

Matt Williams put Town in front from a corner, but before half-time Terry Jarvis had knocked in a near post corner from Chris Dash for the equaliser.

The game stayed that way until the first period of extra-time when Sean Lee beat the offside trap to go round the 'keeper and score from an acute angle to put Town back in front.

Within minutes Athletic were back on level terms when substitute Simon Merrifield equalised with a header.

The dramatic finale came around three minutes from time in the final period of extra-time when Andrew Mackay scored a goal worthy of winning the tie with a screaming shot into the roof of the net.

First-ever win after 17 months

IT might have been a long time coming, but Channel Foods broke their duck in the Tescans West Cornwall Sunday League when they won their first-ever match at the weekend.

Channel Foods made their second division debut 17 months ago, but have never seriously threatened to spoil anybody's weekend – until last weekend that is when they "thrashed" Star Inn 5-2.

Creating the headlines for Channel Foods were goalscorers Rob Wilding, Sean Harris (2), and Mark Burley (2, 1 pen).
