Falmouth Town are about to enter what could be a make-or-break period for the club as far as their season is concerned.

Town’s South West Peninsula League Premier hopes are fading after a difficult December. They had an outside shot at the title until they came unstuck against fellow high-flyers Tavistock, Exmouth and Plymouth Argyle, and now third place is probably the best they could hope for, although fourth or fifth is more likely.

The cups are now Town’s best hope of success, with Town one of three sides still in the running for a possible Cornwall Senior Cup and Walter C Parson League Cup double as both tournaments reach the quarter-final stage.

One of the other two sides is St Austell, who Town visit on Wednesday night in the first of the four League Cup quarter-final ties.

Town will want to make amends after losing 3-0 to the Lillywhites in the Senior Cup last eight last season in what was their first match after the enforced winter hiatus.

Town then have a ten-day break from action with no scheduled fixture this weekend, before next Saturday’s Senior Cup quarter-final at home to Launceston.

Again, Town will want to make amends after suffering a 2-1 defeat in the league fixture at Bickland Park in September, when Launceston came from a goal down to steal all three points.

The Clarets have only won once in the league since that day – against bottom club Sticker – and have lost eight of their last nine games in the league, so Falmouth will be considered favourites for this one, unlike Wednesday’s tie.

Defeat in both games would be catastrophic for Town, who would then have just the league fixtures left to play this season, with Town needing a very strong last third of the season to finish in the top three or four but lacking the motivation of a season-ending cup final like last year.

Win both, on the other hand, and there will be plenty of life left in Town’s season just yet.
