Newquay Hornets 10, Penryn 12

NEWQUAY Hornets, on their return to the Memorial ground in November, were crushed 48-6 but in the return clash on Saturday, they fared much better and were beaten only in the closing minutes of a more even game.

Pernryn had the better of first half play and led 6-0 thanks to two penalty goals kicked by fly-half Symon Winnan.

Hornets improved considerably after the interval and had their reward when scrum-half Kevin Wheeldon slipped over for a try which fly-half Gerald McKenna converted.

Winnan kicked Borough in front but the Hornets hit back with a penalty of their own, again from McKenna, to regain the lead at 10-9.

Just when victory was within the Hornets' grasp a further penalty enabled Winnan to kick his fourth and winning goal just before the end.

Falmouth Packet:

Okehampton 0, Falmouth Town 0

FALMOUTH Town's season is fast disintegrating and following this shock result at Okehampton even the title is now looking a forlorn hope.

Out of the FA Vase, out of the Cornwall Senior Cup, and thoughts of the league fading fast, the only realistic hope of a trophy is now the Jewson SWL Cup.

Town were below strength for the game at Okehampton, but the home side who have conceded 80 goals in 19 games should not have posed too many problems for a side with championship potential.

But football is never that simple and although Town dominated the game for 90 per cent of the time, they lacked that vital spark and ingenuity to break down the home side.

Town: D Philp, Powell, P Scrace, D Northcott, C Long, T Matthews, G Hooper, N Thwaites, J Babb, M Rowe, I Gosling. Subs: K Burleigh, D Babb.

Penzance-Newlyn 15, Falmouth 12

THE Pirates completed the double against Falmouth on Sunday when they defeated them at the Mennaye Field by three tries to two.

When the teams met at Falmouth on the first day of the season, the Pirates snatched a last-kick victory 20-18 with a penalty goal kicked by Stephen Larkins. At Penzance it was not until the last few minutes that the home team were able to repeat their earlier victory.

With the score at 12-10 in their favour, victory for Falmouth appeared well within their grasp. However, as in the earlier fixture at Falmouth, victory was snatched from them in the closing stages when Peter Jackson scored his second and winning try.
