Plymouth Marjon 3, Porthleven 4

CHRIS Wormington’s injury-time winner sent Porthleven back to the top of the South West Peninsula League Division 1 West table after a seven-goal thriller at Plymouth Marjon on Saturday.

The last-gasp win sees Porthleven return to the top of the table, although Liskeard Athletic now have three games in hand on the Fishermen.

Porthleven boss Alan Carey said: “It’s a tough place to go, it’s an artificial pitch, the play on it every week or every other week. They know how to play it, there’s no doubt about that, and they’re not a bad side, take nothing away from them.

“It was a tough game but I felt it was a game that we always had the little edge on it and I felt that we were the better side.

“We came through and showed really good resilience to stick in there and get the winner in the 93rd or 92nd minute or whenever it was. We just kept going, kept going, kept going, so it was pleasing.”

With the visitors looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Liskeard, George Molcher gave them the ideal start this week inside eight minutes with a low shot into the bottom corner following a good run.

But their joy lasted barely ten minutes before Marjon were level, with Mike Axworthy getting on the end of a free-kick.

But Port had their noses back in front ten minutes before half-time when Molcher fired an excellent shot past Marjon ‘keeper Liam Hooks.

However the home side were back on terms before the break, with a fast break down the flank resulting in a cross into the box where Denham Guild was on hand to send it past Steve Parker-Billinge in the Porthleven goal.

The hosts completed the turnaround when they returned for the second half, with one shot cannoning off the post towards Sam McGowan who bundled in the rebound.

The score remained the same until 15 minutes from time when Fox popped up to level the scores with a shot from inside the box.

The visitors knew a victory was crucial to keeping their title hopes alive and got it deep into injury-time when substitute Max Everard’s high cross was headed home at the far post by Wormington.
