Porthleven 2, Illogan RBL 2 (Illogan win 4-2 on penalties)

PORTHLEVEN crashed out of the Cornwall Charity Cup at the hands of lower-league Illogan RBL after suffering penalty shootout heartbreak at Gala Parc on Saturday.

Heydon Dark had given Port a half-time lead but goals from Jason Roberts and Anton Oliver looked to have won it for the visitors.

But Tom Annear’s late lob deep injury-time took the game to extra-time, before Illogan eventually prevailed in the penalty shootout to seal their spot in the semi-finals.

The defeat marks the Fishermen’s exit from two cup competitions in successive weeks, after last week’s 3-1 defeat to Wendron United in the Cornwall Senior Cup quarter-finals.

Dan Hindmarch was unlucky not to give Port the lead when his curling shot cannoned off the post and rebounded back to him, only to strike the same post with his follow-up effort.

But the hosts were in front on the half-hour mark when Dark fired home from the edge of the box.

Porthleven were forced into a change of goalkeeper on 56 minutes when Steve Parker-Billinge was replaced by Dan Greet, with Scott Kellow donning the gloves for the remainder of the match.

Illogan were level ten minutes later when an inswinging corner was met by Roberts who planted a bullet header past Kellow.

The visitors almost took the lead shortly after when a lob over Kellow was heading in, but Annear got back to hook the ball away from danger.

But they did edge in front in the final minute of the 90 when Aaron Myers played in Oliver to hammer the ball home and seemingly win the tie for the Combination League club.

But, with Porthleven staring an unlikely defeat in the face, Annear managed to take the game to extra-time when his long ball into the box evaded everyone and flew into the top corner in the dying seconds.

The extra 30 minutes passed by with little incident so the game was to be decided by penalties. Jordan Adlard and Tornado Bello scored but Dan Greet and Rob Carey had their spot kicks saved by Illogan’s Brian Scoffin.

Steve Abbott-Smith, Dom Batchelor, Stuart Peters and Anton Oliver scored from the spot for the visitors, who will now play one of Penzance, Liskeard Athletic or St Dennis in the semi-finals.
