Torpoint Athletic 2, Falmouth Town 1

ROB Wearne’s first goal since returning from a long-term injury was not enough for Falmouth Town to avoid defeat on their visit to Torpoint on Saturday.

Wearne came off the bench to score his first goal since an eight-month injury layoff with just five minutes to go in Saturday’s game, but it proved to be a mere consolation as Town slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

The defeat means Town have not still won a league game on the road since a 1-0 victory at Bodmin Town on October 24, having drawn three and lost three since that game.

Both sides had early chances with Luke Johnson hitting the crossbar for Town, while ‘keeper Ryan Barnes made a good save from Luke Cloke.

But the hosts were in front on 19 minutes when Josh McCabe fired home after Barnes parried team-mate Scott Blatchford’s shot into his path.

Falmouth responded well with Tim Nixon putting a shot narrowly wide, although Barnes had to make another good save to deny John Heveran just before the break.

Town were dealt a hammer blow within two minutes of the restart when Cloke turned Gary Hird’s cross past Barnes to double the home side’s lead.

The hosts pushed for a killer third but were first denied by another good stop from Barnes, before putting a free header wide from a matter of yards.

Wearne came off the bench to pull one back for Town with five minutes to go, but despite late pressure in which Nixon struck the crossbar in the dying moments, Town left The Mill empty-handed.
