Falmouth and St Austell will renew acquaintances once again after they were drawn together in the semi-finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup.

The tie will be played at Newquay’s Mount Wise ground on Tuesday, March 5 (ko 7.30pm).

The two teams have played each other seven times since the start of the 2017/18 season, with Falmouth winning four and St Austell winning two, while the pair shared ten goals in an incredible 5-5 draw at Poltair Park in October 2017.

Their most recent meeting came at the same ground just three weeks ago, when Jordan Annear scored the only goal as Falmouth won 1-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Walter C Parson League Cup.

Town beat South West Peninsula League Premier strugglers Launceston 4-0 in their quarter-final, while St Austell won 5-0 at Division 1 West club Wadebridge Town.

Wendron United will face Saltash United in the other semi-final the following day.

Manager Andrew Westgarth was philosophical about facing the Lillywhites once again, saying: “It’s crazy that we have them two years running in both cups, and it is what it is but if you want to win you’ve got to play the best sides.”

Town also have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to next month, but their league form took another turn for the worse at the weekend with a 2-1 reverse at Torpoint Athletic.

“I can’t argue with the outcome, chances wise they deserved it,” Westgarth said. “It is hard to do the same things over and over again, we are doing well but not winning.”

On a brighter note, Westgarth was “delighted” that Town striker Rob Wearne got on the scoresheet in Saturday’s game.

Wearne was making his first league appearance, and second in all competitions, since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in a Combination League game at the end of last season.

Wearne came on in place of fellow striker Matt Buchan on Saturday, who has also just returned after a lengthy injury layoff which has seen him out of action for the best part of four months.

The duo’s return will be a timely boost for Town, who will be without Jordan Annear for much of the remainder of the season, while Jack Bowyer’s availability is limited after joining the police force.
