Falmouth 14, Kingsbridge 10

Falmouth made it four wins from five games with a hard fought 14-10 win over Kingsbridge in the Tribute Western Counties West League on Saturday, writes Joseph Macey.

A single try from Tom Simmons and accurate kicking from Justyn Irons sealed another important result for The Eagles after falling behind early on.

Head Coach, Graham Whitmore, said: “Our work rate and our work ethic out on the field, particularly to get ourselves into effective positions both in attack and defence was the key thing, Kingsbridge really thrive on front foot ball and we spoke about how to deny them time and space on the ball and the intent from the players in doing that was terrific.

“Today was one of the first times we looked like a really good unit, it was a cracking game of rugby, two sides that went hard at it together and we fully justified our position in the table today I felt.”

The Eagles took time to find their feet in the game and found themselves behind after Kingsbridge scored the game’s opening try within ten minutes.

The game was played in good conditions and with a roaring crowd Falmouth quickly found themselves ahead. Matt Horton smartly evaded a challenge and the ball was carried over by Tom Simmons, a deserved try after an extended period of pressure.

Neither side was giving up any space and the game could’ve easily gone the other way when Nick Carne was shown a yellow card. Kingsbridge took advantage and broke through the Falmouth defence to score, the kick was missed which kept The Eagles within touching distance, 8-10.

Falmouth were cheered on by a big crowd and two superb Justyn Irons penalties in reply to falling behind edged them to the victory.

The game was also the last for Seb Firth who is moving to New Zealand, a fantastic player that will be missed. Good luck for the future.
