Falmouth Town's bad luck in the striking department plumbed new depths on Saturday.

A renewed injury crisis has left manager Andrew Westgarth as the squad's only fit striker, who played the final 20 minutes of Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Elburton Villa.

Westgarth came on for the injured Rob Wearne, who himself had replaced injured striker Matt Buchan shortly before half-time. To compound matters, the duo have both only just returned from lengthy injury lay-offs.

Those two were the only other available strikers at the club, with Jack Bowyer having joined the police force while last season's top-scorer Jordan Annear is only available when parent club Plymouth Parkway are not in action.

Westgarth said: "Everything that could go wrong seems to be going wrong at centre forward at the minute.

"Before you know it we’re down to just me, which is not an ideal situation to be in.”

Life doesn't get any easier for Falmouth, with new league leaders Exmouth Town making the long trip to Bickland Park this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

One crumb of comfort for Westgarth is that his side's home record is still impressive, despite Town's recent troubles on the road. Falmouth have lost just three of their 18 games at Bickland Park in all competitions this season, and won all of the rest, with two of those defeats coming against high-flyers Plymouth Argyle and Tavistock.

“We’re a different beast at home and I fancy us to beat anybody at home no matter how we’re playing because on our day we are a good footballing side and other teams have to put the boot on the other foot. They’re the ones playing away from home, they’re coming down to us, they’ve got to travel, so sometimes that works for us and against us.

"Equally when we go away it’s difficult for us to travel, but I always fancy us at home.”

Despite their league woes, Town are having another impressive season in cup competitions, having reached the semi-finals of both the Cornwall Senior Cup and Walter C Parson League Cup.

The defending League Cup champions were drawn to face Cullompton Rangers in this year's semi-finals last week after last month's quarter-final win at St Austell, who incidentally are Town's Senior Cup semi-final opponents.

The tie will be played at Saltash United's Kimberley Stadium on Wednesday, March 27 at 7.30pm.

The winners will play the winner of Saltash United's tie against either Elburton Villa or Mousehole in the final on Saturday, May 11.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, obviously," Westgarth said. "Again it’s a competition that we’ve got a good chance of progressing and it’s a game we’re all really looking forward to, to try and keep our season alive and it’s given us some hope.

“Top six is still a realistic target, which it was at the beginning of the season. Obviously people had ideas of winning the league but the hardest thing in life is to consolidate and to be consistent and that’s what we’re trying to do.

"If we can get top six, and get to a cup final then I would still class that as a successful season off the back of winning the Charity Bowl, Dave Gardner and beating Truro [in pre-season].”
