Falmouth Town will be hoping to end their season on a high with victories in their two cup finals this Easter, writes George Fortey.

Town will go up against Saltash United on Easter Monday in the Cornwall Senior Cup before playing them again in the League Cup final on May 11.

Falmouth Town have great pedigree in cup competitions and are looking to retain the League Cup having been victorious last season.

However, in recent years, the Cornwall Senior Cup has proven more elusive, with Town being unable to get their hands on the trophy since 1997.

Here is a look back at that triumphant final in '97 and the other ten victories Falmouth have amassed in the competition.

Falmouth’s first major success was in the 1962/63 season where they won the first of their four domestic trebles.

With no substitutions allowed in those days, Town put a lot of their success down to being able to stay relatively injury free throughout the campaign.

The season was remembered for being a titanic battle with St Blazey, of whom they met in the final of both cup competitions.

The Cornwall Senior Cup produced Town’s finest display with a thumping 7-1 victory over their rivals.

Falmouth’s battle with St Blazey would continue over the following seasons with back-to-back Senior Cup final wins in 1965 and 1966.

New manager Richard Gray was introduced in 1968 after playing for both Town and Plymouth Argyle as a defender.

Gray will surely go down as one of the club’s greatest managerial appointments as he masterminded the Falmouth side to their second Treble with a 2-0 victory over Torpoint in the Senior Cup final.

Town would repeat the feat three seasons later, this time beating Liskeard 4-1 in the final.

The team continued their fine form well into the 70s with four consecutive final victories between 1975 and 1979.

However, the years that followed were increasingly unlucky for Falmouth, who, despite reaching the final five times in the 80s and early 90s, were unable to lift the cup.

The next time that Falmouth was in the Cornwall Senior Cup final, and indeed the most recent time, was in 1997 when they faced off against Nanpean Rovers.

Town were much the fancied team, but their defence struggled against the opposition’s direct tactics and were lucky to escape the match with a 1-1 draw.

With no extra time or penalties, the two teams would play again in a replay, three days later, to decide who would take home the trophy.

The replay was another tight affair with both teams going into half time with ten men, following a clash between Lee Fox of Falmouth and Nanpean striker Jerry Soloman.

Nanpean started the better of the two teams in the second half and took the lead through Gary Dyer’s penalty.

The goal served as a wake-up call for Town and the team began to rally, scoring the equaliser through Jason Carwadine not long after.

Town carried on their momentum and bagged the winner through Lee Cansfield who arrived onto Andy Street’s pass to fire home form the edge of the box.
