The up and coming Cornish sailing stars of brother and sister duo Theo and Jasmine Williams have been praised for their performances at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

Truro’s Williams siblings represented the British Youth Sailing (BYS) Team in the mixed Nacra 15 multihull at the prestigious regatta held in Gydnia, Poland, from July 15-20.

Finn Hawkins, 16, from St Austell, competed in the boys’ RS:X windsurfer class.

The Williams’ took the top spot at the RYA Youth National Championships in the Nacra 15 class, earning them their spot at the Youth Worlds. They finished the Youth Worlds in 15th.

“It has been an amazing experience meeting and racing against the world's best young sailors, said Jasmine, 15.

Theo, 18, added: “We're a little disappointed with our overall result but we have learned a lot this week and will take that moving forward. The Nacra 15 World Championships is coming up soon so we will look to capitalise on our experience of the Youth Worlds.”

The Cornish trio were among fourteen of the country’s most promising young sailors representing Great Britain at the Youth Sailing World Championships.

Previous Youth Worlds participants include some of today's best-known sailors including the world's most decorated Olympic sailor Sir Ben Ainslie and 2008 Beijing gold medallist Pippa Wilson.

Jonny McGovern, the RYA’s Youth Worlds team leader, said he could not be more proud of the attitude from his athletes.

“They all showed a really professional approach and worked well together to keep fighting all week,” he said. “We had a real mix of conditions throughout the competition and it was great to see so many in contention for medals going into the last day.

“The experience the sailors gained this week will give them a great springboard to build on in the future. I’m very proud to have been associated with such a talented group of sailors. Now on to the next start line.”
