The new football season is just a few short days away, and here is how you can follow the events of the 2019/20 campaign with the Packet.

Match of the day

Every weekend – plus several midweek evenings – will see one of the biggest local football matches given the feature match treatment.

This coverage will start with a live blog on our website, which will allow you to follow the action as it happens, view photos from the game as they are taken, and keep up to date with the key half-time and full-time scores from around the grounds.

A match report of the game will be available to view on the website shortly after full-time, with a photo gallery and video highlights of the game available later in the evening, or the following morning if it is an evening game.

Rounding off the feature match coverage is a new piece called The Final Word, which will be published the following day and take a look back at some of the key talking points and subplots from the game.

Rounding up the action

Our weekend coverage extends well beyond our featured match, though.

Results round-up: A full-time results service will provide results from up and down the local football and rugby leagues on Saturday evening.

League round-ups: The action in the Southern League Premier South, South West Peninsula League, St Piran League West and Combination League will be summarised with their own round-ups, as well as a separate round-up for all of our local rugby sides – from the Cornish Pirates in the second-tier RFU Championship down to Helston and Stithians in the tenth-tier Cornwall 2.

Reports: There will also be more in-depth match reports for certain games, including Truro City, Cornish Pirates, Penryn RFC, Camborne RFC and more.

Interviews: Find out in their own words whether our local football managers are over the moon or sick as a parrot after their latest game with our manager reaction round-up.

Not just news

Aside from the live reports, interviews and round-ups, there will also be a host of regular columns and nostalgia content.

The first of our new set pieces is SWPL Insider, a fortnightly column every other Thursday which will look at the latest events in the South West Peninsula League Premier West, which is the main competition for Falmouth Town, Helston Athletic, Porthleven and Wendron United.

The piece will assess recent results, cast an eye over the title tussles and relegation battles, preview some of the biggest upcoming matches, and throw in a few stats along the way.

The Thursdays in between will alternate between Tigers Talk, an update on Truro City’s fortunes in the Southern League, and Rugby Report, which will keep tabs on our rugby sides' progress up and down the local and national leagues.

A weekly Local Look column, which, predictably, looks at the world of local sport, will be online every Thursday, but you can read it a day earlier in both the Falmouth Packet and Helston Packet.

Classic Clash will be online every Wednesday afternoon and will show a report of a sports match from days gone by, but can you work out when it took place?

Our Golden Oldies photo of an old team line-up will be online every Thursday evening. Can you recognise anyone in the picture?

25 Years On will look back at the local sporting headlines from, you guessed it, 25 years ago, which will be online on Monday evenings.

Sports Reporter Matt Friday’s Friday Feeling will cast an eye over the big stories in the wider sporting world.
