Falmouth boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Premier League despite losing by six wickets at home to Grampound Road on Saturday.

Falmouth were bowled out for 177 four balls shy of the 50 overs, with Grampound condemning the hosts to a 15th defeat from 16 games after meeting the total in the 40th over.

Despite the defeat Falmouth have closed the gap on second-bottom Callington to just eight points with two games to play.

It is likely to come down to the final match of the season next weekend, when the two teams face each other, with the likely loser of that facing potential relegation.

Despite losing Scott Kellow (6) cheaply early on, fellow opener Grant Stone provided the top score of the day, hitting 52 off 106 balls.

Richard Kellow had provided an equally handy 49 in the meantime, although Harry Roberts had also gone for a duck to become Lewis Sanders' second of five wickets.

Stone's dismissal took Falmouth to 135-4, but the hosts lost their remaining six wickets for 42 runs.

Oliver Paull was next to go for a golden duck, with Duncan Ayres following soon after for eight.

Joe Harrington (13), Steven Redwood (4) and Louis Rudin (2) were removed, with James Williamson the final to fall after being run out on 15 by Alex Rust.

The early signs were promising for the home side in Grampound's reply, with Alex Matthews being bowled by Ayres for a golden duck at 3-1.

But the rest of the upper order weighed in with decent contributions to set the visitors on their way.

David Hoskings scored 33 before he was caught by Aidan Carter, Thomas Orpe added 36 before he was lbw off Stone's ball, and Ravindra Karunarathna hit 40 until he struck himself out by hitting the wicket.

But Alex Lean (30 not out) and Chris Willett (7 no) for the visitors over the line with just over ten overs left.
