SAM Hillson's late strike ensured Wendron United fell to defeat in a weather-hit meeting with Bodmin Town.

Jack Stocker gave the home side a half-time lead with his long-range strike shortly before the break, but Dan Pethick levelled midway through the second half, before Hillson fired in from close range to complete the turnaround with ten minutes to play.

Despite torrential rain for the entirety of the match and prior to kick-off at the Underlane, the game went ahead with Bodmin enjoying the first opportunities. Dan Jennings and Tallan Mitchell had shots blocked inside the box before the latter fired over the crossbar a minute later.

The visitors had a huge chance ten minutes before the break when Joe Souch's free-kick deep in his own half went straight to a Bodmin shirt. The visitors came forward with Jennings' shot being saved by Dan Stedman, with Callum Kenny striking the post with the goal gaping from the follow-up effort.

But the Dron edged in front just before the break with a goal out of nothing. Stocker picked up the ball 40 yards out and fired it over visiting goalkeeper Richard Kellow and into the empty net.

Bodmin stepped up their attempts to find an equaliser in the second half, with Kenny striding in on goal but saw his shot well saved by Stedman.

Mitchell and Dan Magee also spurned chances to score, with the former curling a shot wide before the latter fired a shot into the side netting.

But they did restore parity in the 65th minute, with Mitchell find space to surge into the penalty area before pulling it back to Pethick, fresh from the bench, to slam it home from the centre of the box.

Pethick had the chance to add another soon after when a free-kick was nodded down to him inside the box, but his chest and volley flew over Stedman's bar from ten yards.

Wendron reminded Bodmin that they were hunting for a winner themselves with 12 minutes to play, when a flowing attack saw Jack Noy and substitute Ryan Tresidder have shots blocked in the box before Stocker fired straight at Kellow.

But the visitors were the likelier of the two to score next, and they were almost handed a goal in the 79th minute when Stedman dropped a catch under pressure from Pethick, but the ball dropped away from the Bodmin striker and was cleared by a defender.

The home resistance was broken just one minute later when Lewis Webber had a powerful shot superbly tipped onto the bar by Stedman following a scramble, with Sam Hillson on hand to fire the rebound in from close range.

Wendron tried to find a late leveller and it almost arrived in the final minute, with Noy working space for a shot on the left of the box but saw his effort fly wide.

Mitchell could have made the win completely safe in the first minute of injury-time when he intercepted Stedman's throw, but the 'keeper recovered well to save the ensuing shot.
