Worthing Raiders 19, Redruth 30

Redruth travelled to deepest Sussex knowing they needed to put in a much improved performance following their disappointing home defeat to Barnes the previous week and they responded magnificently winning 30-19, writes Bill Hooper.

It was a result that put the smile back on Director of Rugby Nigel Hambly's face.

He said: “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance, we trained really well last week and the boys hard work was rewarded today.

“We took our chances well and played some smart rugby at times, also getting the bonus point is a big plus.”

It couldn’t have started better for the men in red when full-back Aaron Simmonds scampered in for a try after two minutes.

Despite missing the conversion fly-half Fraser Honey made amends soon after with a penalty goal to make it 8-0 to Redruth.

Before half-time Redruth added another eight points as Dean Bonds scored a second unconverted try and Honey adding a second penalty.

Worthing threatened the Redruth line as the half neared the end but the Reds held out and got back downfield earning another penalty chance, Honey’s effort in the difficult wind struck a post and stayed out.

Worthing struck early in the second half when fly-half Matt McLean scored a try adding the conversion.

The Raiders then cut the deficit to just two points with another converted try from flanker Will Gearing-Grief.

However, Redruth showed great character scoring a third try through the forwards with lock Todd Prisk getting the touchdown, Honey slotting the extras.

The ding-dong nature of the game continued as Worthing struck again with an unconverted try from wing Harry Forrest to make the score 19-23 to Redruth.

Redruth were not going to let their hosts upset their day, following good play from both Brad Howe and Ben Fox they set up a bonus point try for wing Matt Shepherd, again converted by Honey and that was enough to see the Reds home.
