Penryn 15, Cullompton 0

It was a case of home comforts once again for the Borough, as they impressively dispatched of Cullompton with a clean sheet intact, writes Ross Hancock.

All of Penryn’s 20 league points have now come at home this season, whilst they also secured their first shut out of the season – a Borough hallmark in recent campaigns.

With either side having not played for a fortnight, it would be interesting to see if any match rust had developed or if the rest had done both teams some good. In Penryn’s case, it was emphatically the latter. Cullompton are no mugs and had started the season very similarly to the Borough, with only a handful of league points between the two outfits pre kick-off. The first half wasn’t a classic for the spectator but a patient job from Penryn gradually ground down the away side, before Grant Randlesome pounced towards the end of the half to give the hosts a 5-0 lead at the break.

In heavy conditions, it was the Borough pack who were getting the most joy as the scrum continued to dominate in the second half. Sam Carter kept the scoreboard ticking with a penalty goal to take the lead to eight, while Cullompton continued to look for answers. Penryn would have been pleased to be more than a score ahead, but well aware that they would need to add to their total to make sure of another home victory. They did just that when Carter got on the end of a grubber kick to convert his own try and kill off any faint hopes the away side had of an unlikely comeback at 15-0.

There was still time for Penryn to continue to give the coaches more reasons to be pleased as time drifted away for the away side. Cullompton camped on the Penryn line looking for what would be merely a consolation score, but Penryn defended ferociously to keep the score at 0 which would have been just as pleasing as the 15 scored. The Borough now look to a huge derby clash away at Falmouth this week, in what would be the perfect time to pick up a priceless first away win of the season.
