One of the most hotly anticipated events of any football club, manager, player or supporter’s season is the derby game. The day your team goes toe-to-toe with your fiercest rivals or the noisy neighbours from up/down the road.

We had Liverpool versus Manchester City, the two best sides in the country at present, on Sunday, with the classic East Midlands derby between Nottingham Forest and Derby County the day before.

My beloved Plymouth Argyle faced their arch rivals, Exeter City, in the big Devon Expressway Derby a couple of weeks ago, although the less said about that dire 4-0 defeat the better.

Closer to home, we are also being treated to not one, but two big local derbies this weekend, with four of the area’s biggest sports clubs facing off against each other on Saturday.

In football, we have the Cornwall Senior Cup third round tie between Falmouth Town and Helston Athletic that was supposed to be played last weekend, but was postponed on the day of the game. All being well, it should be all systems go this weekend.

Andrew Westgarth’s Town currently hold the bragging rights after their sensational 5-1 win at Helston in the FA Vase four and a half weeks ago, but Steve Massey’s title-chasing Blues will be itching to set the record straight. Prepare for fireworks at Bickland on Saturday, albeit on November 16, rather than November 5.

While the region’s top football teams renew rivalries once again, the area’s top rugby sides will be locking horns for the first time in a competitive fixture for three seasons just 1.2 miles up the road, as Falmouth welcome Penryn to the Rec for their Tribute Western Counties West game.

While they have met in the traditional Boxing Day fixture each year, the teams have not faced each other in the league for three seasons, following Penryn’s relegation to Tribute Cornwall/Devon.

But now the Borough are back, with Ian Morgan’s boys set to take on Graham Whitmore’s Eagles this Saturday.

Who will prevail on Falmouth’s big sporting weekend? Borough or Eagles? Town or Blues? Morgan or Whitmore? Westgarth or Massey?
