Redruth 25, Worthing Raiders 0

Redruth made it five league wins on the bounce with this bonus point win against visitors Worthing, writes Bill Hooper.

But what pleased Director of Rugby Nigel Hambly the most was zero points conceded. “For a coach that is so pleasing to nil your opponents, our defence today was top-draw. There were times when we could have cracked with the pressure we were under but the lads were determined not to concede, all credit to them.”

With Redruth holding a former players reunion it was a good day for the Reds to show the Old Boys what they were about!

Conditions were tricky at the Recreation Ground with stiff breeze making kicking from hand and off the tee difficult, but to their credit both Matt Shepherd and Fraser Honey for Redruth mastered the conditions.

Worthing played down the slope first half but they couldn’t settle as Redruth harried them at every turn.

Honey opened the scoring for the Reds with a penalty goal after 16 minutes.

Soon after Redruth built on that score-line with a brilliant score, instigated by scrum-half Jack Oulton who broke down the blind side evading tackles making good ground before finding the flying Dean Bonds in support, although tackled short of the line the winger was able to plonk the ball on the line.

The Redruth pack was slowly getting on top with the front row of Tommy Phillips Richard Brown and Jess Tompsett prominent, whilst the Prisk brothers in the second row were a constant threat.

Indeed it was Tompsett who scored the second try just before half-time following a succession of pick and goes near the Raiders line. Honey banged over the conversion for a 15-0 lead.

The second half saw Redruth largely in control, some good play from the backs saw Shepherd go in for a couple of unconverted tries to seal the win.

The Redruth faithful cheered the win as the Reds kept the pressure on the sides above them.

The Reds are back on the road next weekend with a trip to Dings Crusaders.
