Bury St Edmunds 17, Redruth 33

REDRUTH ran in three converted tries during the final quarter to finish the stronger and make it ten wins on the trot for the men in red, writes Bill Hooper.

The result also edges them a little closer to the promotion battle above them, and with league leaders Tonbridge Juddians the visitors at the Rec next Saturday, all to play for!

The first quarter remained scoreless; however Redruth eventually got the first points with a try scored by lock Todd Prisk. Fraser Honey kicked to the corner and Redruth pack did the rest allowing Prisk to score, the fly-half adding a good conversion in the tricky wind.

Hooker Richard Brown bagged the second Redruth try just seven minutes later to give Redruth a useful 12-0 lead heading towards half-time.

However, Bury struck just on half-time when following a series of pick & goes prop Patrick Robinson squeezed over for an unconverted try, the Reds also lost full-back Matt Shepherd to a yellow card.

Bury mad the most of the man advantage at the start of the second half, Home fly-half Kodie Hawkins a try and then added the conversion to replacement centre Gregory White’s try to turn the game on its head 17-12.

Redruth looked to the bench to energise the effort and it was replacement Aaron Simmonds who scored the visitor’s third try from an interception, which Honey bettered to re-take the lead.

The Redruth pack dominated the closing stages with wing Dean Bonds flying in for the bonus point try with Honey again in the money before Shepherd put in a burst following a scrum five meters out to power over to cap a fine day out.

Director of Rugby Nigel Hambly was pleased with the win, saying: “A good result which makes the effort to get to Bury worth it. We played well in the first half but then let them back in early in the second half before a good finish saw us home.

“A big game next week against Tonbridge, we will train well this week and look to try and get another win in front of our supporters, hopfully they will be there in force to cheer us on.”
