Penryn Athletic 3, Wendron United 1 AET - Cornwall Senior Cup, January 2016

PENRYN’S “reward” for this extra-time victory in the Cornwall Senior Cup is a trip to holders St Austell in the quarter-finals.

It was a cracking game at Kernick Road, with the visitors playing a full part in an end-to-end encounter which could have gone either way but was ultimately settled by two Dave Broglino goals in the second period of the extended half-hour.

Penryn began brightly and in the 13th minute Ryan Reeve broke away down the right and slipped the ball into Scott Palmer, whose shot beat Ben Mitchell at the near post.

The visitors were in no mood to lie down and Mitchell’s opposite number Chris Symons produced fine saves to deny Tom Langford and Wendron skipper Justin Searle.

Charlie Davis’ men produced a stunning equaliser in the 33rd minute when a free kick fell to Langford on the edge of the penalty area and he hit a half volley that dipped over the head of Symons.

Parity at the break, but the home side enjoyed more possession in the second period, but Wendron remained a threat on the break and Reggie Pearson, Michael O’Neill and Langford could have all won the tie for the visitors, but for the outstanding Symons.

The game continued at a breathless pace in extra time and five minutes into the second period, the decisive goal arrived when substitute David Leach worked back to win the ball and release Broglino, who kept his footing and composure to slot past Mitchell.

There was still time for a third goal from Broglino, who scored his 12th of the season to set up the daunting trip to Poltair Park on Saturday, February 13.
