FALMOUTH Town manager Andrew Westgarth is pleased to have finally got the signing of right back Kirk Davies over the line.

The experienced former Town, Penryn Athletic, St Austell, Wendron United and Helston Athletic defender was due to make the move from Porthleven ahead of Town’s game at home to Bodmin Town on Saturday, March 14.

But with the FA suspending all football the day before the game amid the coronavirus outbreak, Davies had to wait until this week to be officially announced as a Falmouth Town player once again.

Westgarth said: “I think he was going to be playing the next game so the seven days were in, he’s agreed to come and it was just a case of Wayne [Pascoe, club secretary] getting the forms over, and then obviously we were told that the season was null and void, so it never actually happened.”

He added: “He’s a Falmouth boy now, he only lives down the road. I think he just gives us that dynamic as a full back, he gives us something different that we haven’t got. I played with him at Helston, I know what he’s all about. He’s a winner and he’ll be a great addition to the squad.”

The full back’s arrival ticks several boxes for the Town boss, who is keen to avoid a repeat of last season, when an absence of defensive players early on precipitated a disappointing start to the campaign.

With goalkeeper Ryan Barnes, right back David Blizzard and centre back James Ward absent for the start of the campaign, Town took just five points from their first six league games, before enjoying a run of 13 wins from their next 15 games in all competitions as the trio, along with experienced centre back Toby Clark, returned.

“Our main objective this year was to not have a start like we did last year,” Westgarth said. I think it was well documented how much we struggled defensively at the start of the season in August, September with Barnesy [Barnes] going away on holiday, Blizzy [Blizzard] was away, and obviously we lost Wardy [Ward].

“Before you know it, we’ve only got two recognised defenders in the back five, which is Coops [Joe Cooper, captain] and [Ollie] Moody.

“Whereas this year, whenever we are going to start, I want us to be strong and I want us to have options and I want us to hit the ground running, so getting Kirk in there and having the availability of all the other players is massive for us.”
