Helston Athletic marked their first game in the Toolstation Western League with a smashing 7-1 victory away to Bridport.

A hat trick from Mattie Buchan, a brace from Kai Cornish plus goals from Phil Cattran and Stu Bowker sealed the victory.

The blues took the lead in the 12th minute when Buchan beat his man for pace cut inside and drilled a shot through the keeper.

They were pegged back immediately however when Bridport number 10 Ryley Weedon struck what could be goal of the season from 35 yards out less than a minute later.

Helston responded well and hit three more goals before half time to asset their dominance. Cattran classily found the bottom corner from 20 yards in the 25th minute.

Cornish scored his first of the game rounding a defender and powering into the bottom left corner in the 31st minute.

Four minutes later it was 4-1 when Buchan kept his composure inside the area before wrapping the ball into the far corner despite a flailing hand from the keeper.

After the break Helston continued to hunt for goals and got their fifth on the 50th minute when Buchan again cut inside and found the far corner to seal an impressive hat trick.

The game began to slow down but Helston still pressed and came close to extending their lead on a number of corners.

Their sixth goal was their best of the game. A cross was headed away by the defence only as far as Cornish who struck a sweet left footed volley past the goalkeeper with 15 minutes to go.

In the 84th minute Bowker completed the goal scoring after coming on from the bench. Billy Tucker played him in and the forward rolled his man before burying his effort at the near post.

Three points on the board and a perfect start to the league season for Athletic who face Saltash on Wednesday night.
