Wendron United and Falmouth Town go head to head as the sides begin their South West Peninsula League (SWPL) seasons tonight at Underlane.

A bumper crowd is expected at Wendron with a number of Falmouth's F-Troop travelling on the Falmouth fan bus.

Former Wendron United Chairman Kevin Williamson will be remembered as the sides go compete in the opening game of the SWPL.

Mr Williamson sadly passed away after he collapsed whilst celebrating his sides victory in the Cornwall Senior Cup semi final in February 2019.

Town have already added Alex Wharton, Andreas Callejstayne and Harry Clarke to their squad but bolstered their numbers with the confirmation of Ade Thompson on Thursday night after a successful pre season with the side.

Speaking about the match Falmouth Town manager Andrew Westgarth said: “When you’ve got three points on the line everyone changes their mindset about the game, not just us. The passes, tackles, shots all mean something extra. I think everyone is champing at the bit, we can be really pleased with the numbers we have and the overall pre season.

“The fact we have got a supporters bus going over there is testament to them (the fans) really, they’re just as excited as we are. I think there will be a few more over there, with it being a Friday night there will be teams who play Saturday who may watch.

"Everyone who doesn’t get a chance to watch Falmouth has an opportunity to get a look at us. Wendron is a perfect venue for it as the setup is really nice.”

Wendron Manager Michael O Neill said:  “Everyone was waiting for the fixtures to come out and everyone wants to know who pops up first the fact it was Falmouth is ideal, it could have been anyone. The fact it’s Falmouth is perfect as it is also the Kevin Williamson memorial game.”
"For this year we have good ambitions but ultimately the main focus is reasserting ourselves as a competitive side where previously we we were stepping into the unknown now we have an insight as to where the other teams sit in respect around us.

"There has been huge improvements from many sides across the league this year, mainly it has been about staying competitive and improving on everything we have done on the last few years."

Kick off at Wendron is at 7:30 and matchday tickets can be purchased on the gate.
