Falmouth Town Manager Andrew Westgarth believed his side 'deserved to win' their Cornwall Senior Cup Second Round game away to Bodmin Town.
Falmouth were cruising 0-3 to the good thanks to a David Broglino brace and a Jack Bray-Evans goal. But three second-half goals in seven minutes from the home side after Luke Brabyn had missed a penalty, threatened to send the game to extra time. In the end Falmouth were thankful to Tim Nixon who grabbed two late goals to go with his earlier assist to put Town into the next round.
Speaking to the Packet Falmouth Town Manager Andrew Westgarth said: "It was a great start, two early goals and then the game was won on big moments.
"Barnesey (Ryan Barnes)made a great save in the first half, we hit the bar, then they hit the post from a free kick. The Truro lad Rooney has gone clean through at 0-2 and if they score that the game changes slightly, they hit the post on the rebound of that. Then we go up the other end and get a trademark Broggy (Dave Broglino) free kick. Jason (Jason Robertson, Bodmin goalkeeper) must be sick of the sight of Broggy in cup football, he did the same when he was at Helston. I never thought at the time but Brabyn missing that penalty could have cost us.
"Out of nowhere they have a mad seven minutes, uncharacteristic from us. But I thought we showed great togetherness, character, team spirit, everything that makes us what we are to get over the line. In the end, we deserved to win the game. I think Bodmin played their part in that, we've played them twice this season and twice they can be bitterly disappointed not to come away with anything, but I think on the balance of play we won the key moments."
Nixon's match-winning performance earned him the Packet man of the match title, and the Manager hailed the wingers clinical performance, he said: "I think Nicko, (Tim Nixon) whether he sees it as a compliment or not, is one of the hardest working wingers that I know. Defensively he is brilliant, he understands the game he has a good footballing brain.
"You just look at his cross for Broggy's first one on a plate was brilliant, he put in some lovely balls all game. When you need a bit of composure, as much as the keeper dollied it Nicko still had to be there, he still had to muscle off a defender to get there first.
"I have seen them go over the bar or go wide. I was pleased with his winning goal too, anyone who has played the game knows when the ball is coming at you from left to right that it can go back where they come from or over the bar so to hit it hard and low the way he did. It was pure relief because then you knew we were through."
Despite the rollercoaster ride of emotions Westgarth believes the win will be more helpful for his side in the long term rather than it being a simple victory. He said: "Overall I said to the lads after the game that winning like that will be more beneficial to us in the long run than winning 3-0 and closing the game out.
"The clean sheet and being easier on the nerves would have been better but I think to show the other side of our game, to show that never say die attitude, the fitness levels and the class. One thing that comes through is the fitness levels we look so sharp, so fit.
"It is hard to believe the two games we have played them they are so low down in the league the two games have been epic battles." Falmouth's next game is at home to Wendron in a local derby at Bickland Park on Friday November 12.
