Porthleven Manager Jamie Webb believed the 8-1 pre-season defeat to Wendron United was an 'eye opener' for his side.

Port, from the St Piran League, travelled to Underlane to face Wendron who finished third in the South West Peninsula League (a league above Porthleven) as well as runners up in the Cornwall Senior Cup last season.

Three goals for Josh Wood, and solitary strikes from Ryan Reeve, Jack Stocker, Billy Stone, Lucas Potts and Sam Young saw Dron home for the win. While Martyn Webster, who scored Porthleven's last goal of the 21/22 season with a match winning penalty, scored a header late on as a consolation goal.

Speaking after the game the Manager said: "We started off slow which doesn't help when you are playing a team in the league above and a very good team at that.

"I think we came into our own midway through. We were sloppy at times. I think it is really good fitness for us, it is an eye-opener to see where we are and what we have to do for next season.

"A lot of teams play sides in the leagues below them, I think that it is sometimes good to play sides in the league above you and see where you are and where you need to be. We know where we need to be now, it is not where we are just yet. We will work on it, we just had a good chat, they are all keen to crack on next week and get on it properly."

"We had a few players who couldn't make it today and we stated with a 16-year-old today who has just joined the club. It is time to try things, try people in positions, play with formations which we don't normally do. We tried things and we will see where we go."

Porthleven's next pre season match is another away match as they travel to Mullion who have been newly promoted to the South West Peninsula League on Saturday, July 9.
