A much-changed Falmouth Town put in a sturdy performance as they defeated Sidmouth Town 2-0 to make it back-to-back pre-season victories.

Town were without first team regulars Tim Nixon, Jack Bray-Evans, Ryan Barnes, Andreas Calleja-Stayne, Oli Walker, David Broglino and Jack Bowyer heading into the fixture.

It allowed an opportunity for some of their younger players to get a run-out in the scorching summer sunshine as both sides had a sloppy start to proceedings.

Town did eventually find their feet and were unlucky not to open the scoring after ten minutes. Charlie Edney did well to pick out James Swan but his half volleyed effort ricocheted off the top of the bar.

Ollie Pickup was proving a thorn in the side of Sidmouth and the forward bought himself some space with a nice shimmy on the edge of the box but his effort was easily held by the keeper on 13 minutes.

He was at it again ten minutes later picking up a pocket in the defence and shooting but this strike flew narrowly high of the crossbar.

A Town trialist Cameron Hutchinson had a glorious opportunity to score moments later after he robbed the ball off the away defence but after beating one defender he could only strike straight at the goalkeeper.

The hosts did finally take the lead with 36 minutes on the clock with a well-taken finish from Charlie Edney, the forward beat the offside trap and raced away from the defence before slotting into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0.

Sidmouth struck back with an attempt of their own but their tricky winger was unfortunate to see his shift inside and drive fly onto the outside of the far post minutes after.

Stand in keeper Zach Telling then produced a marvellous save to deny a close-range Sidmouth header five minutes before the interval, making himself big to block the powerful effort from close-quarters.

Town made no changes at the break as Pickup continued to be a constant threat for the home side, he tried again with an outside of the area shot but again it didn't make it past the goalkeeper.

Edney ought to have scored a second with what turned out to be his last intervention of the match. The striker got on the end of an inch-perfect centre from Tom Moxham, however despite being yards out the forward could only head over the bar on the hour mark.

Edney, Pickup and Swan were then substituted for first team regulars Luke Barner, Alex Wharton as well as Jordan Annear who was returning for the day with numbers short.

Wharton had two opportunities to score six minutes after his introduction after being played in by Hutchinson but saw his first shot saved and the rebound could only be sent well wide of the target.

Scott Kellow and Jack Webber were then replaced by Jasper Turner and James Ward before Wharton was again denied in the 71st minute. This time his pea-rolling effort delicately dribbled past the keeper before being cleared off the line.

With 75 minutes on the clock it was all Town as Ward was the next to go close, smashing the bar from a corner. It was a trademark effort from the centre back who notched double figures in goals last season. But this time he could only see his powerful header fly off the top of the woodwork and into the Packet End.

Sidmouth rarely threatened but when they did it was on the counter and again they were unfortunate to see a curling shot from outside the box bend just shy of the far post.

Falmouth did eventually given themselves some breathing space ten minutes from time with a poachers finish from J. Annear. Hutchinson did well to beat two players on the edge of the box, his deflected shot fell perfectly into the path of Annear who was able to prod into the corner to make it 2-0.

With two minutes to go Annear should have added his second and Falmouth's third after being well picked out with a low cross from Wharton but somehow with the goal gaping he fluffed his lines and scuffed the ball which was once again hooked off the line as Falmouth held out to seal the win.
