The fixture chaos facing Cornish football brought about by the continuing bad weather has finally forced the Football Association into extending the season for the lower leagues so that they can complete their fixtures, writes Leon Prynn.

The St Piran League secretary, Steve Carpenter, informed the clubs of the decision last Thursday.

In his notification he said: “Given the recent weather, the league has been granted permission to play on Saturday, June 1, if need be and, if required, to continue until the 8th.

"The hope, of course, is that this won't be necessary and it is contrary to the end date agreed at the AGM of the more usual May 31.

“If any club has an issue with the extension please get back to me. Similarly, if you feel that you may be in a position due to your fixtures where you may be required to play in June and this presents a problem please get in touch with Ian, Davey or Dave.

“This extension does not apply to the premier divisions where the FA are still to respond about the end date of May 4.”

Surprisingly, 11 games survived the Saturday carnage of games called off, some matches being postponed with both sides present, but with the relentless rain beating down on the pitches football had become impossible.

In the premier division (West) Hayle added to St Agnes’ woes when a goal in each half earned them a 2-0 win whilst at Clifden Park Mullion Reserves and St Just drew 3-3.

The crunch match in division one saw Mawnan win 1-0 away to title favourites Praze-an-Beeble in a match played in heavy conditions.

As in past games there was little to choose between the sides with Mawnan’s Ollie Growcott-Smith and Harry McMellon defending well against the strong first-half wind and although Praze had the ball in the net from a corner it was disallowed for pushing by referee Lee Anthony-Lee who had a very good game.

Both sides created openings, but neither could find a way past the respective ’keepers until the 77th minute. Will Harding delivered a deep cross into the box and Luke Wort pounced at the far post to head past the ’keeper.

The energy-sapping conditions took its toll on the players, but Mawnan saw out the game for an important victory.

Camborne SoM pulled off a stunning 6-0 win away to a West Cornwall side who have been in top form. Ed swain snapped up a hat-trick with Alex Imam weighing in with a brace and and Oscar King scoring the other goal.

Promotion chasing St Ives Town drew 1-1 with high-riding Hayle Res after Andrew Barry scored a second half goal and RNAS Culdrose marched on with another 2-0 win against Troon after scoring second half goals through Braden Danaher and Zya Sateri.

Ludgvan heaped more pressure on St Agnes Reserves after winning 5-0 with goals from Henry Cozens (2), Andrew Curnow, Josh Findlay and Jonathan Sopp. Cornwall Junior Cup semi-finalists Falmouth United hit the buffers in their division two league game with Penzance Reserves and were beaten 3-0 after Kyeron Snowden hit a hat-trick.

Stithians got their season back on track with a 4-2 win against St Buryan. The goals were shared between Treve Bale and James Martin who bagged a brace each.

The only game in division three saw Holmans SC leapfrog Probus at the top of the table after a 4-2 win against Lizard Argyle. Tristan Hawkings scored a goal in each half for Argyle, but Holmans took the points with goals from Marcus Peters, Scott Thomas, Liam Phillips and Ross Williams.

Dropship Reserves picked up a very good 4-1 win away to Mullion III after notching goals through George Gaylord, Taylor Hosking, Ben Kellow and Peter Norfolk.

Pendeen Rovers Reserves were awarded the points after Helston Raiders were unable to raise a side.
