Falmouth Town Reserves 1 - Holsworthy 1
ANOTHER sizeable crowd on a very hot summer's day took the opportunity to visit Bickland Park to see if Falmouth Town Reserves could unseat high-flying Holsworthy in the Walter C Parson SW Peninsula League, writes Leon Prynn.
It finished all square, but despite dominating Town had to settle for a draw.
Town included Luke Brabyn who was unable to travel with the first team due to work commitments, Aaron Hicks sustained a shoulder injury against St Day, but a bonus was Tom Fisher being available.
Town made the perfect start when a strong run from Brabyn from just inside his own half saw him power through the visiting midfield and find Evan Tresidder on the edge of the box. Tresidder took a touch and then finished with a 20-yard shot which found the opposite corner of the net after just 35 seconds.
Five minutes later fellow striker Jack Davies found himself clear on the corner of the box but slid his shot just wide of the post.
The midfield trio of Finn Robinson, Ryan Townson and Connor Davey were controlling the tempo of the game and although Holsworthy started to probe and get a foot in the game the defensive trio of George Evans, Kirk Davies and Tom Fisher thwarted anything that came their way.
Davies, who had sustained a groin injury, was replaced by Will Harding at the break and the second half was only six minutes old when Tom Fisher sustained an ankle injury and was replaced by 16-year-old Harry Hopkins who went up front and put in a real shift
Holsworthy, to their credit, were making a game of it without threatening Town’s goal, but Town were probing and could have been awarded two penalties. as well as missing a couple of good chances.
This proved costly when four minutes from time a ball over the top exposed Town’s defence for the first time and as ’keeper Fearn came out was beaten to the ball which was calmly squared to Ben Sharpe to calmly sidefoot the ball into the empty net.
It then became end to end football with James Henwood replacing Davey to keep Town ticking along.
Right at the death Townson found himself closing in when it looked like he was clearly fouled, but the referee waived away the strong penalty appeals.
“It’s a strange one as the lads are really disappointed to not take the three points,” said manager Jon Perrow.
“The draw almost feels like a loss, but I said to the boys after the match that is how far we have come that we are so disappointed not to have beaten a side who are in the top four and only conceded one goal before today’s match.
“It’s been a tough start to the campaign and the lads are learning on the job so to speak, but they are now acquitting themselves and finding their feet.
“Home form is critical and we want to make Bickand Park a fortress in front of these large crowds. It comes down to fine margins but, I am more than happy with where we are.”
Town entertain Truro City Reserves at Bickland Park on Wednesday evening with a 7.30pm kick off, and on Saturday visit league leaders Liskeard Athletic.
