Cornish Pirates have announced a major new investment from the United States, believed to be the first of its kind for an English professional rugby club.
Cornish Pirates have secured a landmark investment from the United States in what is believed to be the first direct US backing of an English professional rugby club.
The Penzance-based side confirmed the deal on Thursday (May 7), describing it as a major milestone in the club’s development and long-term ambitions.
The investment comes from J. Kenneth Moritz and John H. Tippins, principals of US firm Stonewood Capital Management, based in Pittsburgh.

The club said the move represents a significant step in its ten-year strategy, which includes growing commercial partnerships, establishing an academy and creating the conditions to reach the Premiership.
Chief executive Sally Pettipher said: “This is a hugely significant moment for Cornish Pirates. To attract investment from experienced US investors of this calibre is a powerful endorsement of our strategy, our people and our long-term vision to build real value, both financial and social.”
The investors said they were drawn to the club’s history, local support and clear plans for growth.

Kenn Moritz said: “We see a compelling opportunity in Cornish Pirates — a club with a proud history, a passionate community and a clear strategic plan for growth. Rugby is entering an exciting global phase, and we believe this investment places us at the heart of that journey.”
John Tippins added that Cornwall shared strong sporting values with their home city, stating they were “excited to support the Pirates as they build something truly special”.

The club said the partnership highlights growing international interest in rugby, particularly ahead of the 2031 Rugby World Cup planned for the United States.
Cornish Pirates were under threat only two seasons ago following the loss of a key owner, but a move to a consortium model in January 2025 helped secure the club’s future.
Since then, the club says it has doubled its commercial revenue and is working towards its long-term goal of reaching the top tier of English rugby.
