Falmouth Town put disappoining performances against Launceston and Buckland behind them on Saturday as they got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory at home to Witheridge.

The Bickland Park outfit could not have got off to a better start as they found themselves a goal up inside the first minute.

A fine cross-field ball found Matt Holland, who took the pass in his stride and knocked it into the area where Liam Eddy came racing in to put his shot wide of the keeper and into the back of the net from eight yards.

Play then ebbed to and fro for a while, with the visitors employing the offside trap whilst trying to launch their own attacks via the long ball.

However, these were usually over hit and Town’s defence were never really stretched. Dan Green played a good ball through for Matt Drummond to run onto and try a shot, but Witheridge captain Richard Groom blocked the ball only to see it run to Eddy, but his first-time shot went wide.

After half an hour Witheridge had a free kick out on the left which resulted in Jason Chapman punching it out.

It only went as far as Steve Ebdy and he tried a shot from the edge of the area, but it flew over the bar.

Within a minute, though, Witheridge had equalised. A defence splitting ball from midfield sent Richard Blake away and he hit a fierce shot that Chapman could only parry.

Blake followed up on this and steered the ball into the net as Chapman tried to regain his feet.

Falmouth hit back as Ross Pope slipped a good ball forward for Green to run on to, but Richard Lamacraft put him under pressure and keeper Steve Johns dived at his feet to gather the ball.

Witheridge began to apply more pressure as half time approached and after forcing a corner, which Chapman punched clear, a low shot into the area by Jake Crush saw Town’s keeper make a good save from David Hood’s shot.

Josh Sims went on another overlapping run along the left flank and fired over a long searching ball that was met by Holland who fired a fierce shot that Johns did well to block and Neil Pointing cleared the loose ball. Falmouth got what was to be the winning goal after 41 minutes.

The Witheridge defence were caught out as they left the ball for each other to deal with and Holland came racing in on the right to smash the ball home from 12 yards. Shortly after this Dan Green was unlucky to see his close range snapshot hit Steve Avery and deflect away from goal for a corner.

Falmouth went straight on the attack at the start of the second half forcing a couple of corners, the second of which saw Matt Drummond head the ball back across the area to Eddy, who in turn headed it into the middle where Sean Flynn headed just wide whilst under pressure.

The visitors tried to get back into the game and David Hood hit a rising shot that Chapman pushed over the bar at the expense of a corner.

Witheridge made a couple of substitutions including bringing on their experienced player/manager Warren Patmore, but Town were holding on and they brought on Richard Kellow to replace Josh Sims in an attempt to counter any threats on the flank. Witheridge keeper Steve Johns was lucky to only receive a yellow card near the end when, after diving at Eddy’s feet to gather the ball he appeared to kick the Town striker as they were getting to their feet.
