Budock Vean Golf course was full to capacity on Sunday for the club's annual charity day in aid of multiple sclerosis with a donation also going to local playing fields.

The record-breaking day attracted a total of 104 golfers from as far away as Cape Cornwall in the West and St Mellion in the East. Their were 45 visiting golfers not only generously supporting the charities but also chasing a terrific selection of prizes kindly donated by a small army of sponsors.

The latest to sign up were TrewCare Ltd; Nigel Logan Wine in Cornwall; Matthew Clark Wines; New Yard Restaurant,Trelowarren; The Marina Bar, Falmouth; and David Short Golf School.

Conditions were pleasant enough apart from a blustery wind as the golfers took their turn on the new first tee which has considerably lengthened the first hole and raised the standard scratch.

By the end of the day Nick Barrington and David Penrose had seen off allcomers with an excellent 41 Stableford points to claim the top prize of an eight-berth villa for a week in the mountains of northern Portugal generously donated by Godolphin Villas.

Runners up were David Gudzij and Ian Scorse, just pipping Alison Samuel and Hazel Mulcahy on the countback. Both pairs carded 40 points.

The best ladies' pair were Tricia Blatter and Sue Parsons with 39 points while Rob Brown and his son, Wayne, from Falmouth Golf Club, were the best visiting pair also with 39 points.

The winners of the best mixed pair was Roger and Shirley Mildren and the best club pair were Barry and Marlene Williams. Both pairs carded 38 points.

The gent's longest drive was won by Treve Evans and Sarah Curnow from Mullion Golf Club won the ladies' longest drive.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Christine Drummond, Nick Barrington and Michael Hayes. Michael also won the putting competition expertly organised by Julian Joffe which took a record total. The prize was kindly donated to the evening auction.

The prizes were presented by club president Mr Bill Hannaford.

The auction was a cocktail of hilarity and serious fundraising as Des "Flog It" Sadler quickly lightened pockets to the tune of £650 with a memorable performance.

Amazingly this brought the charity fund past the £3,000 mark, eclipsing the previous record. A delighted club captain Keith Rashleigh said it had been a tough few weeks bringing it all together, but he had received great support from the management and staff of the Budock Vean Hotel especially Sam Fitzgerald, the manageress, and Tony and Sue Ramsden who manage the golf department. And, of course, the Barlow family who own the four-star hotel golf and country club.

"A lot of people from every section of the club worked very hard to make this day happen and the effort proved very worthwhile," said Keith Rashleigh who holds his captain's day on Sunday.
