Rumours surfaced this week that relegated Football Writers Player of the Year Scott Parker could be on his way to Arsenal in a £6m move.

One of few West Ham heroes this year, this move would not only do wonders for the end of Parker’s career but demonstrate some realisation from Arsene Wenger after his team limped to the end of the season with some very absent leadership.

Should this move happen, and Parker is too good for the Championship so why not? Wenger would do a lot worse than make the England midfielder his captain straight away.

Cesc Fabregas was never a credible choice as captain for Arsenal and his inabilities have been a factor in their unsuccessful year. It has been widely documented that the Gunners’ failure is because they do not have players who can take a game by the scruff of the neck and ‘win ugly’ and Fabregas personifies this.

His appointment was simply because he was the best player at the time but he has had an uninspired season which began with rumours of a move to Barcelona and has ended with his dismal campaign that has put an end to those rumours. Behind Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, he would get nowhere near their starting line up.

Starlet Jack Wilshere and forward Robin van Persie have been more important to Arsenal’s cause this season and better players than Fabregas. Both of them would have been better choices as captain but if Parker comes to the Emirates he would top the list.

With Avram Grant as limp in leadership off the field for West Ham as Fabregas has been on it for Arsenal, it was down to captain Parker to galvanise the players and fight for the cause. This might have been a losing cause but you can’t fault Parker’s desire and with players such as van Persie in and Thomas Vermaelen around him rather than Carlton Cole and Danny Gabbidon, he might help towards a better outcome and possibly even some silverware.

It is very unlike Wenger to buy ageing players like the 30-year-old Parker in an effort for short term success. But a big change is needed at Arsenal and there are not too many better options out there.
