Cornwall Athletic Club runner Emma Stepto celebrated her recent wedding by winning the Cubert 5-mile road race three days after her big day.

Emma Stepto, nee Stallard, finished the course in 28 minutes and 35 seconds to pick up her fourth Grand Prix victory of the year, while Jim Cole crossed the finishing line in 25 minutes 40 to collect the men’s title.

A cool blustery evening greeted the massive record field of 673 runners who toed the line at Cubert for round six of the Grand Prix Series sponsored by Cornwall Glass and Glazing.

The wind assisted flat first mile meant a faster start than usual for most runners, with the Vic McKee Trophy, for the first runner past the one mile post going to Cole, who accelerated clear of Dan Alsop (St Austell Road Runners) to claim the prize. As the leaders turned into the quieter and more sheltered country lanes, Alsop closed the gap and rejoined Cole, before the Devon runner, who won this race two years ago, began easing ahead of the St Austell athlete just before the halfway mark. Cole maintained a slender 20-metre advantage up to the four mile point, when a stitch slowed Alsop, as Cole powered home to win by 40 seconds. As Alsop slowed in the closing stages, the Under 20 winner Dan Nash (East Cornwall Harriers), enjoying by far his best Grand Prix race to date, sensed a possible upset, closing down on Alsop, who spotted the danger and managed to hold off the East Cornwall Harrier by four seconds.

Colin Snook (4th) led the Cornwall AC squad home in fourth place, nine seconds ahead of team captain Dave Buzza (5th). And with their six scoring runners in the top 15, Cornwall AC won their fifth Grand Prix team race of the year, with Newquay Road Runners in second place and Mount’s Bay Harriers third. In the ladies race Emma, fresh from her wedding, to Brett, soon moved into the lead and at the end of the first lap was 10 seconds ahead of team-mate Naomi Tier. On the second circuit, she put her foot on the gas, opening up a winning lead of almost one minute, whilst a real scrap was developing for the runner's up prize as another recently married athlete, Lucy Hodgson (Newquay Road Runners), nee Kelvy, began closing on Naomi, who spotted the threat just in time, finishing two seconds in front of the Newquay runner.

With Kathryn Burgess in fourth place and Jenny Almey eighth, Cornwall AC were comfortable team winners, ahead of a strong Hayle Runners quartet with the host club, Newquay Road Runners third.
