Plans for a memorial to legendary Exeter City striker Tony Kellow who won the football league’s “golden boot” in season 1980/81 are nearing completion in Tony’s home village of Budock Water.

Tony was a prolific goalscorer who was probably best known for his stunning hat-trick which knocked Leicester City, then playing in the top tier of English football, out of the FA Cup.

Keith Rashleigh and Rex Sadler are the driving forces behind the project and Keith is delighted at the way the community have responded. He is most grateful for the contribution from Terry and Marie Coleman of Granite Worktop Factory and Steve “Ernie” Duckham of Mylor Building Company for their generosity in providing materials and labour free of charge. Roger Lane is another who kindly contributed and without the support of the Budock Parish Council and it’s chairman John Bastin it would not have been possible.

The date for the official unveiling of the stone is Sunday, December 4 at 3pm. Tony’s family will be present as will many friends. Exeter City football club will be strongly represented with a coach coming down on the day and will be bringing down a special portrait of Tony to be placed in the Trelowarren Arms which is adjacent to the “Old Village Pump” where Tony’s stone is situated.
