Truro City’s 2012 got off to the worse start on Sunday as a bizarre own goal from Arran Pugh saw them fall to a 1-0 defeat at home to Weston-Super-Mare.

In a game devoid of goalmouth action it was Weston who created the better chances in the second half and deserved to come away with the points.

It was revenge for the north Somerset side, who had been beaten 1-0 on Boxing Day by City despite having dominated the match.

Truro City were again short on numbers for the match naming just a 14-man squad. Dan Smith stood in for the injured Barry Hayles up front, while Andy Watkins, Ed Palmer and Jake Ash took up unfamiliar roles in midfield.

Tom Brooks was also deputising for Tim Sandercombe in goal and he was in trouble in the opening few minutes as a corner from Jamie Laird crashed against the crossbar.

Another cross into the box from Laird then saw Sahr Kabba send a header goalwards, but this was well saved by Brooks.

At the other end Truro City’s first chance at goal came when Les Afful played a neat one-two with Smith, only to see his goalbound effort ruled out for offside.

Truro City came into the match more as the half wore on, but a well organised visiting defence kept their chances to a premium.

A good chipped ball into the box found Afful in space, but before he had time to turn and shoot Laird had marshalled him away from the danger area.

In the second half Truro continued to struggle with corners and crosses into the box as another ball found its way to the back post where Kabba’s shot was pushed to safety by Brooks.

The best move of the match came midway through the half as substitute Chris Young slid a ball out wide to Nat Pepperell.

He fizzed a dangerous low pass across the six-yard box, which former Wigan player Kane Igram connected with at the back post only to see his shot cannon back off the woodwork.

City offered little going forward in the second half only a hopeful punt up field from Steve Adams caused any panic in the Weston box.

At the other end Truro were still not dealing with the corners well as a weak punch out from Brooks saw Matt McGregor hit an effort just wide off the post.

Truro were almost gifted the win moments later though as Watkins closed down Laird in the right corner of the pitch.

The Weston player attempted to hit a back pass, but got it woeful wrong forcing keeper Lloyd Irish to head the ball out of the top corner of his goal.

Having survived that own goal scare, Weston were then gifted the match themselves. Matt Villis hit a long ball upfield, which threatened to loop over the City defence. Arran Pugh stuck out a boot to stop the ball, but watched in horror as his interception looped over the stranded Brooks and in to the corner of the net.
