Falmouth strengthened their hold on third place in the league with this unconvincing win over eighth placed Camelford at a wet and slippery Bickland Park on New Year's Eve.

In this first league match between the two sides since 1963, Camelford put up a spirited display and can curse their luck as it was two own goals that deprived them of the points.

Falmouth dominated the early stages with Matt Drummond having a couple of chances, one of which brought a good save out of visiting keeper Josh Colwill who had a fine game between the sticks for Camelford.

Town finally took the lead after 16 minutes when Dan Green's corner struck Camelford defender Leighton Carhart on the chest and flew past Colwill into his own net. This seemed to sting Camelford into life and they attacked along the left flank with Gyles Reynolds squaring the ball inside to Ryan Pooley who fed Mark Guterson, but his shot flew just wide of the post as Mitch O'Donnell closed in on him.

At the other end, Matt Drummond ran on to Mark Vercesi's pass and took it past Adam Sleep, but Colwill was out of his goal quickly to dive at the striker's feet as he was about to shoot. Karl Turner had a good run on the left and played a low ball inside to Ian Hodges whose first-time shot was parried by Colwill and cleared by Dan Metherell before Hodges could pounce on the rebound. A few minutes later, Hodges was again foiled when he got his head to Dan Green's right wing cross only for Colwill to get his outstretched arms to it as he dived across the goal.

Camelford nearly levelled early in the second half when Ryan Pooley hit a long shot that Jason Chapman was forced to tip over the crossbar. Dan Green sent in a looping cross from the right and Ian Hodges shot was tipped around the post for a corner. The resultant kick led to a frantic scramble in the six-yard box and Hodges saw his close range shot hit the post.

Adam Sleep had another good run through the middle for the visitors and this time opted to try a shot himself, but it flashed wide of the post. Darren Hicks came on to replace the hard working Ross Pope and pushed forward to link up with Drummond and Hodges who were being restrained by Dan Metherell and Josh Insley who were both having a good game at the heart of the defence.

Dan Green hit a long shot that Colwill just tipped over the bar and from the corner the ball was only cleared as far as Hicks who hit a stinging shot from 20 yards which forced Colwill to dive full length to save.

Falmouth's lead was doubled after 78 minutes when Dan Green played the ball in from the left and Adam Sleep hammered the ball past his own keeper and into the net as he attempted to put it behind for a corner. Following this Town made a couple of substitutions with Dan Magee and Lee Rundle coming on to put some fresh legs into the game as the pitch cut up and play was getting bogged down in midfield.

Magee had a couple of good runs down the right, but the final ball in to the area was cleared by the hard working visiting defenders.

Camelford pulled a goal back five minutes from the end when Chapman's attempted clearance on the greasy surface fell to Josh Insley and he hit a long range effort over the keeper and into the net to complete the afternoon’s scoring.

Falmouth will be in action next on Saturday when they face Saltash United in the CSWPL.

Falmouth are looking for their 12th straight victory in the league.
