Falmouth Town chairman Steve Kimberley hailed his side’s performance in their Throgmorton Cup against Saltash United ‘as the best 90 minutes he has seen from his side this season’.

The team went a goal down after 46 seconds, but then put in a spirited fightback to win 5-3.

It ends a run of cup defeats against Saltash, who knocked Town out of the FA Vase, Cornwall Senior Cup and Throgmorton Cup last season.

“I thought we were absolutely superb,” said Kimberley.

“It was a heavy pitch, which was bad for both sides. But don’t forget we played 90 hard minutes against Camelford on a heavy pitch on Saturday.

“Saltash actually had their game cancelled so you would have said they would have had fresher legs. However, after going 1-0 down after 46 seconds, with that calamitous goal it seemed to spur us on and to go in 3-1 up at half-time, at Saltash, was good.

“I thought we were maybe going to shoot ourselves in the foot giving away that soft goal to make it 3-2, but we dug deep," added Kimberley. “The players were superb. It was the best 90 minutes I've seen them play this season.”

“They kept their heads up. We don't like going a goal down, but if you say to yourself ‘right we are 1-0 down, but let’s start again’. And that is exactly what we did. We sured that back four up. I thought Chris Menhenick and Shane White were superb in the middle there. It is hard to pick anybody out that played better than anyone else though as they all did well."

Kimberley also had praise for full-back Jamie Devine, who hit a superb 30-yard shot into the top corner of the goal just when the match was in the balance at 3-2.

“It was an unbelievable strike. We know he’s got a good left peg,” said Kimberley.

“We have seen it in training, but that was made for him. It sat up nicely and he hit it just right.”
