Falmouth Town chairman Steve Kimberley has said his side is capable of winning the Cornwall Senior Cup this season and ending a 15-year drought since their last success in the competition.

Town last won the Cornwall Senior Cup in 1997, when they beat Nanpean 2-1 in the final, but on Saturday they face Saltash United away in the quarter-finals and Kimberley believes they stand a very good chance of progressing.

Falmouth, managed by Alan Carey, have met Saltash three times already this season, losing both league matches but winning a Throgmorton Cup tie 5-3 against them in January.

“I think all the games we have had with them have been quite close, but in the Throgmorton Cup match we were by far the better team,” said Kimberley.

“I thought the three goals flattered them. We hit the post and the crossbar and one of their goals we gifted to them in the opening minute.

“I think that goal spurred us on that day and we played fantastically. Saltash will not be looking forward to us coming back to their ground.”

Falmouth Town go into the match on good form having put seven goals past Royal Marines on Saturday.

However, Saltash suffered a shock 4-2 defeat at home to Collumpton Rangers at the weekend.

Added to that Darren Hicks, who joined the Ashes from Falmouth, in January, will not be able to play as he is cup tied. Falmouth on the other hand have a full-strength squad to choose from.

“We have lost a couple of players in the past few weeks with Shane White and Darren Hicks going, but what Alan (Carey) has done this year is gone and got strength in depth,” added Kimberley.

“There are a few players from the Reserves team who have stepped up and done well. Nathan McIntosh has played for us up at Launceston and last weekend and done fantastic and that is what you need when you lose a couple of players or get long term injuries, is players coming in and stepping up to the plate.”

“On Saturday (against Royal Marines) we played some terrific football. What we did was we went at them from the off and that’s what Alan likes us to do, he likes us to go and attack teams. We were fantastic on Saturday and played some terrific football. If we play like we have been recently, then there isn’t a side in that division that can live with us - including Buckland and Bodmin.”

Asked if the Cornwall Senior Cup represented the club’s best chance of silverware this season, a confident Kimberley, added: “Not necessarily, we are still in the Throgmorton Cup with a quarter-final match against Penzance (on Wednesday, February 29). I fancy us for both the Throgmorton and Cornwall Senior Cup this year.”

“The thing with the Cornwall Senior Cup this season is you look at it and think there are a few teams in there that you wouldn’t expect. It is like the FA Cup, it throws up a few shock results and you look at it and go ‘that’s nice’, but what I will say is that at this stage of the competition there are going to be no easy games.”
