Cornwall County Cricket Club has announced that 24 year old Sam Wood will be their match professional for the 2018 season.

Wood is a left-handed batsman who bowls right-arm off-spin.

He is a former England Under 19 International and progressed through the Nottinghamshire youth system and second team to play for the first XI.

He made his first class debut in 2011, at the age of 18, as a nominated replacement when Samit Patel was summoned to England duty after three days of a Championship match against Lancashire at Trent Bridge.

The following season he scored 45 in Notts' first innings against Surrey at The Oval and dismissed Jason Roy for his maiden first-class wicket, before going on to take 3 for 64.

It was in one-day cricket where he featured most at Trent Bridge playing 13 List A games, mainly in the Royal London Cup, and 24 NatWest T20 Blast games between 2014 and 2016. Playing club cricket for Plumtree, in the ECB Nottinghamshire Premier League, he won the League’s leading All Rounder award in 2016. One of the highlights was an innings of 152, off 88 balls, that included 12 sixes. He also took four or more wickets on six occasions during the season. He is the current club captain.

Last year he played Unicorns Counties Championship cricket for the Eastern Division Champions Lincolnshire. He hit three half centuries in four games including a top score of 85, against Bedfordshire. He also played in the Unicorns Trophy quarter-final win over Devon at Grantham and made 40 in the semi-final success against Hertfordshire at Harpenden.

In January 2011, in his second England Under 19 Test Match, Wood made scores of 130 and 95 against Sri Lanka in Colombo. He also represented England in the Under-19 World Cup in Australia in 2012.

The highlight was his 104 off 111 balls, including seven sixes, as England beat West Indies at Townsville in the play-off for fifth place. Wood opened the batting with Kent’s Daniel Bell Drummond and ahead of the likes of Ben Foakes, Ben Duckett and Craig Overton. Reece Topley was also a member of the team and the leading wicket taker in the tournament, which was won by India.
