Falmouth Town 2, Torpoint Athletic 0 JORDAN ANNEAR returned after a five-match absence to help Falmouth Town to a 2-0 victory over Torpoint Athletic at Bickland Park on Saturday, writes Matt Friday.

Luke Brabyn opened the scoring with his first competitive goal for Town, before the returning Annear bagged his ninth goal of the season just before half-time.

Falmouth started well and Ryan Martt, who came close to scoring his first Falmouth goal last week, hit the post with a header in the fourth minute.

However the hosts were ahead nine minutes later when Luke Brabyn raced onto Marcello Jones’ through ball, rounded Torpoint goalkeeper Kane Gregory and slotted into an empty net.

The visitors could have been forgiven for thinking they had levelled shortly after, but for an excellent fingertip save by Ryan Barnes to tip Curtis Damerell’s goalbound strike onto the post.

Town enjoyed superiority in the first half and had two claims for penalties when Olly Walker and then Luke Brabyn went down in the box, but referee Derek Hughes thought otherwise.

It looked as if, despite their dominance, Falmouth were going to lead by a solitary goal at the break, but Annear rounded Gregory on 43 minutes to double Town’s advantage.

Torpoint were the better side in the second half and came inches away from a route back into the game. Ben Applegate let fly from the edge of the area but his effort was just wide.

The home side still threatened on the counter and they should have had a third on 55 minutes when Annear laid the ball off to Brabyn, but the latter rolled his shot narrowly wide.

The visitors’ best chance of the second half came in the 79th minute when substitute Barhos Zad’s shot was saved, before fellow sub Ben Waters headed the rebound over the bar.

Falmouth: R Barnes, D Blizzard, H Clarke (J Webber 70), J Ward, J Cooper, R Martt, L Brabyn, D Broglino, M Jones (T Annear 70), J Annear, O Walker (A Westgarth 82).

Packet Pick: Luke Brabyn – Full of energy on the right wing, and showed calmness for his goal.

Falmouth go to Newquay in the league on Tuesday night before visiting St Austell in the Walter C Parson Cup on Saturday.
