Porthleven put five goals past Wendron at Gala Parc last night to return to the top of the SWPL Division 1 West table.

Wendron led inside two minutes through Charlie Clarke before Matt Drummond levelled just before half-time, with second-half strikes from Matt Thackeray, Hayden Dark, Drummond and Dan Hindmarch giving the hosts a comprehensive win.

The visitors took the initiative in only the second minute when Clarke cut in from the right and fired into the corner from the edge of the box.

Determined not to miss the chance to go top, the hosts fought back with Wendron having to clear off the line from a corner before Liam Hunter sent a shot into visiting goalkeeper Jack Mitchell's arms.

Port then got the goal they needed with the final action of the half when Drummond was left with acres of space in the six-yard box to head Josh Sims’ superb cross past Mitchell.

Wendron came out firing after the break and the hosts had Jason Robertson to thank for saving both Ryan Tresidder’s venomous 30-yard effort and Clarke’s low strike.

Those saves proved crucial as the home side edged in front in the 71st minute when Thackeray was on hand to head in on the line from a corner kick.

Port then doubled their lead only three minutes later when Dark picked up the ball and arrowed a shot in from outside the box to the delight of his teammates.

The quickfire double knocked the stuffing out of Wendron and Porthleven began to ease to victory, with Drummond seizing on a weak back pass to finish comfortably from close range on 83 minutes.

The Fisherman made it five in injury-time when substitute Hindmarch pounced on a loose ball to hammer in from six yards and complete an emphatic second-half turnaround.
