THEY left it late but Wendron United made it second time lucky at Kellaway Park as they defeated Helston Athletic Reserves.

The Jolly’s Combination League tie on Saturday came seven days after Dron have visited the same ground to play against the Blues’ first team in the Charity Cup.

Paul Murray’s men had fallen to a 4-3 defeat after extra time in the cup, but this time round a Justin Miles penalty with five minutes left secured a 2-1 win for the visitors.

This victory moved Dron to third in the table and above Helston, who had taken the lead through Liam Eddy after 30 minutes.

Mike O’Neil equalised for the visitors before Miles sealed the win with their manager saying he was pleased with the performance shown by his side.

Murray said: “I thought the patience we displayed was really good.

“We went there and tried to play a bit differently to the previous Saturday, but we knew it would be just as hard as against their firsts because their seconds are a good, physical side.

“We didn’t start off well but in the second half we improved and we didn’t panic or make mistakes at the back towards the end as they looked for an equaliser.”

Steve Brewer and Jason Roberts both went close for Dron early on, but home goalkeeper Barry Hennesy came out on top of the one-on-ones involving them.

Helston got in charge of the game and took the lead with half hour gone as Eddy, playing for his hometown club as St Austell had a week off, nipped in to strike past John Row.

Dron regrouped at half time and altered their formation with Ryan Tresidder coming on for them.

It was the substitute who created his team’s first goal with 65 minutes gone as his diagonal ball into the box was controlled well by O’Neil who then slammed it past Hennesy.

Both sides pushed for a winner but it went to Dron as Miles converted a penalty after Justin Searle was brought down in the box.
