WHISPER it quietly, but there is no rain in the forecast for the next three days.

Five months into the season, Falmouth Town have not yet reached the halfway stage with their fixtures, but after the early exit from the Cornwall Senior Cup, they have the chance to notch up another league game in the Premier Division of the SWPL on Saturday (3pm).

Town boss Andrew Westgarth said: “It’s been a very frustrating period but it’s not a big issue if we have to play two games a week towards the end of the season.

“As a player I’ve always enjoyed it - as the weather improves you want to play football.”

Their opponents Ivybridge, managed by former Plymouth Argyle stalwart Nicky Marker, are something of a bogey side for Town. In the last four meetings, they have racked up 17 goals and conceded just one against the Bickland Park outfit.

Last season’s league games, played within the space of eight days, resulted in 5-0 and 6-0 defeats, the latter of which was Falmouth’s second heaviest home defeat since the South West Peninsula League began in 2007.

Westgarth added: “I’m sure they’ll be a well-drilled side but those results were before my time here so I don’t know too much about them.

“I have a virtually full strength squad to pick from so I’ll have to make some difficult calls before Saturday.”

Town’s only injury absentee is Connor Rhodes, but with the recent emergence of 16 year old Ollie Walker and the return from university of Lewis Wilson, Westgarth has “19 or 20” to choose from for the first time this season.

Westgarth is featured in our Sports Thoughts column this week - turn to page 83 to find out more about the prolific striker.
