A SOLID display saw Penryn Athletic bag three points in their first match of the 2015/16 campaign away at Dobwalls on Saturday.

Strikes either side of half time from Sean Johnson and Scott Palmer saw the side who finished third in the South West Peninsula League West last season get off to the best possible start at Lantoom Park.

Dobwalls struggled to apply any pressure during the match as Athletic's defence showed why they only conceded 33 goals in 2014/15, but upfront they made hard work of the chances which fell to them.

On scorching hot day, prompting referee Martin Smith to call for water break intervals, Athletic nearly went ahead early in the tie when Ryan Reeve sent a shot wide.

Palmer also found himself well placed to open the scoring only to hit his effort weakly, giving Josh Gilbert an easy save.

Just as the half came to a close, Athletic did finally take the lead as Johnson played a delightful one-two with David Blizzard before seeing his shot ricochet off a defender and past Gilbert.

Another punch was dealt to Dobwall three minutes into the second half as Kevin Lawrence sent a through ball for Palmer to run onto.

The striker powered his way to goal and as Gilbert sprinted out, Palmer was composed enough to chip the goalkeeper despite having a defender on his back.

All seemed certain for Athletic to celebrate securing three points, but Dobwalls did endeavour upfront and Curtis Kearney thought he had pulled one back, only for it to be disallowed for handball.

Inside the last quarter of the clash, Athletic created a host of chances with Luke Brabyn, Palmer and Reeve all getting in on goal, but each time they failed to make the most of the opportunity.

Sticker will be the first visitors to Kernick Road this season when they travel down on Saturday.
