Falmouth Golf club failed by the narrowest of margins to reach the semi finals of the prestigious Frank Wills Salver against China Fleet, who received strokes in all the foursomes matches, at storm battered Newquay golf course on Sunday writes Keith Rashleigh.

Fleet were led off to a winning start by Darren Billing and Joe McLeish by 2&1. Richie Perrin and George Popperwell played their usual solid game to level the score by winning their match by 2 up.

James Harvey and Sam Murphy made it two matches to one for China Fleet as they won by 2 & 1. Before the Falmouth pairing of Steve Briers and Matt Morrison then levelled things again with the most emphatic win of the day by 3 & 2.

With the score locked at two matches apiece it was all eyes on the Falmouth pairing of Mickey Doust and Paul Huckle and Fleets Andy Foster and Lee Jackets as their match finished all square before entering a winner takes it all play off. Despite the atrocious weather the China Fleet pair made a regulation par four at the testing first extra hole to Falmouth`s bogey five to send Fleet through by three matches to two.
