The Benney Shield for 0-16 handicappers and the Ruberry Cup for 17-28 handicappers attracted a bumper turnout at Budock Vean Golf Club on Sunday, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Veteran Bill Hannaford stole the show with a hole-in-one on his way to winning the Ruberry Cup at the 168-yard par three 15th at Budock Vean on Sunday.

Bill has enjoyed a lifetime of competitive golf including playing on every Open Championship golf course. His only previous hole-in-one was at a Captain’s Day at Falmouth back in the 70s. For the record Bill took a driver. Well the breeze was against.

His round was not too promising in the early stages as he started with a double bogey and then a quadruple-bogey at the treacherous 456-yard dogleg fifth before slipping into his steady mode to cover the back nine in a very impressive 37 gross to card the best net of the day 62.

Runner up was Rob Gibson on countback from David Houldsworth both returning fine net 67s. The Benney Shield was won by club captain Ron Brown who played solidly throughout as he carded a number of pars and avoided any double bogeys for a winning score of net 66. Runner up was Bob Hartnell with a fine net 68 and third was Geoff Mills one of a number of newcomers who have joined the club in recent times with a useful net 69.

The trophies were presented by Edward Benney and Angela Ruberry.

On Wednesday Barbara Craig won the Champion of Champions with a fine net 67. Runner up was Shirley Mildren with another good score of net 71 and third was ladies captain Alison Samuel with a net 73.

The extra Stableford was won by Yvonne Russell on countback from Nina Hann both having played well to card 39 points and third was Lesley Upperton with a tidy 35 points.

This Sunday is the President’s Putter open to ladies and gentlemen.
