Moeen Ali’s three-wicket burst put England in control as Australia limped to 214 all out in the opening one-day international at The Oval.

Off-spinner Moeen took three for 43 from his 10 overs, but it was a spell of two wickets for three runs in eight balls that turned this game in England’s favour.

Australia were bidding for a bridge-building charm offensive in their first international action since March’s ball-tampering scandal. Whatever their behaviour off the field, the visitors certainly struggled for any woo-factor with the bat.

Moeen drew a false shot from Aaron Finch, clean bowled Shaun Marsh and then pinned captain Tim Paine into a mistake to boot.

Both Finch – via a thick edge – and Paine, with a poor reverse sweep, holed out to Mark Wood at short third man.

Glenn Maxwell hit 62 from 64 balls to dig Australia out of an even deeper hole, but even he could not turn his 16th one-day international 50 into any kind of match-winning knock.

Instead he under-hit a lofted stroke for a facile catch for Jonny Bairstow off Liam Plunkett, and after that England completed a summary removal of the tourists’ tail.
