Gary Wilson praised the attitude of first-round opponent Luca Brecel after the two carved out their own slice of history at the World Snooker Championship.

Locked at 9-9 heading into a decider, tension was palpable as the pair made their bid for a place in the second round at the Crucible.

But what followed was a combination of attrition and mastery, Wilson holding his nerve to clinch the re-racked frame – the longest in Crucible history finally ending in 79 minutes and 31 seconds.

“It hasn’t really sunk in, I’m just over the moon to get myself over the line in that game,” said qualifier Wilson, who faces three-time world champion Mark Selby next up.

“It was hard-fought, not a lot of quality to be honest, it was really draining and I tried my best just to get over the line.

“It wasn’t snooker – I don’t really know what it was, just me getting to ten before he did.

“Luca is a top kid, he praised some of the escapes I was getting out of and said they were phenomenal, it was really nice of him to say that after just losing.

“I’d have been devastated if I was in his shoes, so fair play to him.”
