SAILORS at Mylor Yacht Club ventured out onto the water on Friday for the opening of the 2015 Penrose Sailmakers Friday Series.

A fleet of 21 boats turned out for the race split across four classes with officer Steve Nicholls setting some good courses with the co-operation of Royal Cornwall Yacht Club along the lower Carrick Roads.

In Class E, Aura skippered by Euan Beattie edged a close race, pipping 4Play, manned by John Kulpa, and Ian Jakeways onboard General Khaos to the post.

Johnathan Myers got off to a flying start on Tomaray in U Class, but was unable to hold off the challenge from his fellow competitiors and had to settle for third place as Mary Boon, captained by John Cruise, bagged the win.

A shorter course was set for Q Class as the mist lowered near the finish with Chalonnaise, manned by Stephen Pendray navigating the course well to win the race.

There were some new faces in the Class H Shrimper fleet and after an interesting battle on the waves, Sarah and James Fairbairn onboard Grace of St Just got over the line first ahead of Mark Lewis on Jennessa.
