A THRILLING finale to the South West Shinty League was had as Mabe conquered Mylor Cons in glorious sunshine at Halvasso Grounds.

With Mabe leading their opponents by a solitary point going into the last league game, it was a winner take all and the game certainly lived up to its billing.

Mylor started off in whirlwind fashion putting a lot of pressure on the Mabe goal and finally opened the scoring with a well struck penalty from Matt Mossop.

Mabe responded well with a cool finish from captain Annan Birkett and shortly after they took the lead with a bullet of a shot from vice-captain Brendan Kelly.

Cons deservedly levelled the score just before the break with a neat finish from Alex Siyver.

The second half started with the same intensity as the first half with some great moves being put together from both sides.

Birkett got his second shortly after the restart and Michael Walters added a fourth Mabe goal after a clever pass from Birkett.

Another good response was put in by Cons with a well taken goal from Siyver and the game ebbed and flowed and was finally sealed with Birketts third goal of the day to restore Mabe’s two goal cushion.

With the final whistle there were great scenes of joy from the Mabe players and support with the large crowd in attendance appreciating the fine display of shinty on show.

Numerous players from both sides were outstanding. For Mabe, Bethany Wilkinson and Mary Walsh were excellent in defence, Kelly and Birkett had a great partnership in midfield and Michael Walters worked tirelessly up front.

For Cons, Siyver had a great performance scoring two goals and Mossop was a constant threat.
